When former milkman Gerald Broughton and his wife Greta celebrated their Golden Wedding, guests were told not to bring presents but make a donation to Faringdon Health Centre.

Mr and Mrs Broughton, from Harris's Lane in Longworth, marked the occasion with not one but three celebrations. The "no present parties" raised £820 to help buy new hand-held computers for six doctors.

Mrs Broughton, 72, said they used the health centre and wanted to show their appreciation.

Mrs Broughton said: "It was a wonderful response from our guests and they were more than happy to make a donation to help the health centre. At our age we don't need any more gifts. We've got enough clocks and vases so we thought the health centre should gain some benefit."

The money will go towards £1,000 the purchase of hand-held computers that doctors can take with them on visits to patients.

The practice manager at Faringdon Health Centre, Virginia Bushell, said: "We are thrilled to bits with the money from Mr and Mrs Broughton and their guests.

"The donation will go towards buying most valuable equipment. The small computers contain full patients' records.

"Previously doctors went out carrying only a summary of a person's records so everyone, doctors and patients, will benefit."
