Julie Summers's previous book was about her great uncle, the Everest explorer Sandy Irvine. Her latest biography, The Colonel of Tamarkan (Simon and Schuster, £8.99), is about her grandfather Philip Toosey, who was in charge of the building of the infamous bridge on the river Kwai during the Second World War.
