Sudden climate change here is one of the reasons why more and more motorists are turning to cars with decent all-weather capability, as opposed to buying big, overly expensive, off-roaders. Two vehicles announced at the Geneva Motor Show will see owners safely home through light snow, or severe ice.

Looking at a sensibly-priced "crossover" vehicle is Suzuki's new SX4, a five-door hatchback that blends the characteristics of sporty compacts such as the firm's Swift, with those of lightweight sports utility vehicles (SUVs) such as Suzuki's Grand Vitara. With off-road capability, decent practicality, and attractive styling, the SX4 should prove a popular buy. Prices start at £9,999 for the SX4 1.6 GL manual and £10,999 for the SX4 1.6 GLX manual.

The launch UK line-up comprises three models powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine: a front-wheel drive model in either GL or GLX trim, and the 4Grip GLX with selectable/automatic four-wheel drive. A diesel derivative will join the line-up in the summer, alongside a four-speed automatic option for the 1.6 GLX.

The SX4 is the result of a joint agreement between Suzuki and Fiat, and SX4 models sold in Europe will be built in Hungary. Volvo, meanwhile, has an all-wheel-drive version coming with the new S80 saloon when it launches here in late June. The 4.4-litre V8 version, with a mighty 312 horsepower under the bonnet, will see off a snow flurry.

The S80 range, already an attractive luxury car buy, looks set for further success with this second-generation model, which features turbo diesel and petrol engine choices, and equipment such as a world-class audio system with a telephone hands-free function, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a new electronic brake.
