An 81-year-old woman who has worked for the Citizens Advice Bureau for more than 30 years has been recognised for her efforts by the problem- solving charity.
Doreen Barnes, who lives with her husband Dick in Fitzharry's Road, Abingdon, started at the town's branch of CAB in 1973, and was an adviser for 21 years before moving on to other support work to keep bureau services running smoothly.
She has worked at the office for 32 years, continuing in her role despite three hip operations.
Now her dedication to the service has earned her a lifetime achievement accolade in the Citizens Advice Volunteer of the Year Awards 2005.
The award was presented to Mrs Barnes in front of more than 1,000 delegates at the Citizens Advice annual conference in York.
She received a certificate and a cheque for £500 to be spent by Abingdon and District CAB, which is extending its opening hours on Wednesdays, to 7pm, to meet increasing demand for its services.
Despite her age, Mrs Barnes still works in the bureau at least two days a week.
She was responsible for compiling the paper and computer versions of the information system used in the bureau and continues to keep the system up to date.
She has also developed an archive for bureau records, sets up CAB displays in the library and council offices, and helps organise the bureau's social functions.
Mrs Barnes said: "I am proud to have received the award but it won't be my swan song -- I will continue my work. I enjoy helping others. The work stimulates my brain and helps keep me fit."
Joint CAB manager Doreen Kinsler said: "Doreen has an enthusiasm that is very infectious, and so much energy."
