John Groszek was crowned club champion at The Oxfordshire after a dramatic play-off victory.

The one-handicapper held his nerve to beat Patrick Knightley on their third extra hole after earlier blowing a great chance of victory.

Groszek fired a 73 in his opening round to lead Seniors Cup winner John Nash and fast-improving junior Craig Hinton by two, while Knightley shot 78.

But a one-under-par 71 from Knightley in round two meant Groszek needed to get up and down from 30 feet on the 36th hole to take the title.

His first putt fell six feet short and his second agonisingly slipped past the cup on his way to a 76.

Alternating between the first and ninth until a winner could be found, the pair halved the first two.

But Knightley's approach to the third play-off hole was blocked off by a tree, leaving the door open for Groszek to claim victory.

The Oxfordshire's general manager, Martin Harris, said: "Our golf season always reaches a dramatic climax, and I'm delighted that this year was no exception.

"John Groszek and Patrick Knightley served up a thrilling finale, the first time we have had a play-off to decide the club champion at The Oxfordshire.

"My congratulations go to John and all the winners from finals day. It's been a terrific season."
