Family and friends of Eastern Bypass crash victims Liam Hastings and Josh Bartlett are selling gold ribbons to raise money for a memorial garden in the boys' names.

The woman behind the initiative, Liam's aunt, Emma Webb-Hale, said the garden would be a lasting tribute to the 13-year-olds.

Liam, Josh and their friend Marshall Haynes, also 13, died when the car they were travelling in veered across the Eastern Bypass and collided with a car being driven by Oxford Brookes student Howard Hillsdon, who was also killed.

Ms Hale, of Court Farm Road, Rose Hill, Liam's mum Samantha and his grandmother, Carol Webb-Hale, have spent the last two weeks sowing more than 500 strips of gold ribbon together.

Money raised from the ribbons, which will be sold for a minimum £1 donation, will go towards the memorial garden at Oxford Community School, East Oxford.

Ms Hale, 24, said: "We are hoping to raise as much as possible. What happened was such a tragedy and it feels like a part of us is missing.

"I hope people will support us and keep the memory of the boys going forever. We will keep going until people want us to stop."

Ms Hale said gold ribbon was used to reflect Liam's love of gold jewellery.

She added: "He had a lot of necklaces and bracelets, so it was really the only colour we could use."

Liam's great uncle and godfather Mark Edwards, who also lives on the estate, said the memorial garden would provide his peers with the chance to permanently remember their friend.

He said: "They died at such a young age and the accident is still pretty fresh in people's minds."

Josh's mother, Jane Barber, said she supported the campaign and was pleased to be doing something with the family of Liam Hastings.

She said: "It'll be nice to do something for Josh. We have not done anything personally because we have not really felt ready. The memorial garden will be a great help for Josh's brother Tyrone."

Funds are also being raised for a memorial garden at Peers Technology College for Marshall Haynes and a sensory garden at Oxford and Cherwell Valley College for Howard Hillsdon.
