Few of us could not have been touched by the humour of the wonderful Ronnie Barker.

The comedy star of the Two Ronnies, Porridge and Open All Hours, who died yesterday, became a national institution, but he never forgot his roots.

He recalled his days at the City of Oxford High School at a reunion in 1981, happily brandishing a cricket bat with some of his former classmates.

He was always full of admiration for the Oxford Playhouse, where his acting career began with the repertory company led by Frank Shelley.

In later life, he strengthened his links with Oxfordshire by moving to the manor house at Dean and opening the Emporium antiques shop in nearby Chipping Norton.

We are certain we have not heard the last of this remarkable man.

He may be no longer with us, but his comedy will live on, to be enjoyed by present and future generations.
