A resident is furious that Oxford City Council did not take steps to fix his faulty roof before rainwater flooded his home, ruining electrical equipment and furnishings.

William Lindo is angry the council has failed to fix his water leak

William Lindo, of Tawney Street, Cowley, said he asked the council several times to do something about the roof, which is cracked and uneven, but no action has been taken.

After heavy rainfall on Friday, water began coming through the kitchen ceiling and the 68-year-old has been left with water damage, ruined curtains and a broken television and record player.

Despite temporary repair work carried out by the council on Saturday, the water is still seeping in and Mr Lindo has to empty a large metal pan full of water every few hours.

He said: "There have always been problems, but when you ring the council they don't do anything. I feel very angry about it.

"I was told the roof should've been fixed 10 years ago. Then you lose all of your things that you work for all your life. It's really painful.

"I can't even sleep at the moment because you have to think when you will need to empty the pan."

Mr Lindo, who has lived at the address for the last 20 years, suffers from rheumatism and said he has found it difficult to clean up after the flooding and to keep emptying the dripping water.

He said: "I've had to get people to come in and do it for me. If it wasn't for them, I don't know what I'd do."

Council spokesman Louisa Dean said: "We were first made aware of the situation by Mr Lindo on Friday. Staff from Oxford Building Solutions (OBS) were sent to inspect the roof on Friday and carried out temporary repairs.

"OBS's specialist roofing contractor has gone back to the resident's home to inspect the roof and clarify what work needs to be carried out. Following the inspection we hope to begin the work later this week."
