Southern League - Mangotsfield 1, Banbury Utd 2: Paul Lamb was Banbury's unlikely scoring hero as they sprung a surprise win in their Southern League Premier Division match at Mangotsfield on Saturday.
With Lamb restored to the midfield after suspension, Banbury were looking to end Mangotsfield's unbeaten record.
However, it was the home side that took the early initiative, and Luke Prince went close when his 22-yard effort brushed the top of the bar.
Prince continued to torment young Tommy Kinch on the right, but to the youngsters credit, he never gave up, and eventually he got to grips with the Mangotsfield winger.
Simon Tricker made a fantastic save when he pushed Luke Corbett's fierce drive against a post, and the ball flew across the face of the goal to safety.
However, two minutes later, Mangotsfield took the lead when danger man Prince sent over a weighted cross from the right to the far post where it was glanced home by Rob Claridge.
In the 18th minute, Banbury equalised when Ollie Stanbridge held onto the ball under pressure from three defenders, and passed to Matty Gooderick, who turned and prodded the ball past 'keeper Dan Greaves, and into the far corner of the net, from ten yards.
The home side came out strongly for the second-half, with Prince, whose threat on the right had been nullified by Kinch by half-time, trying his luck on the left wing, but finding Wayne Blossom in similarly defiant mood.
Banbury had Ady Fuller to thank for heading clear when a goal looked on the cards.
Their hard work started to pay dividends and after a period of pressure, they took the lead.
Following two corners in quick succession, Darren Pond's flag-kick from the left was only half-cleared, and the ball fell to Lamb, some 22 yards out from goal, and he volleyed the chance into the top corner of the net.
Mangotsfield then hoisted every ball forward in an attempt to save their previously unbeaten record.
But ther visitors held firm, and an 86th minute strike from Mark Summers was headed off the line by Kinch, to underline Banbury's determination to hang on to the points.
