Football fans visiting an Oxford bank have helped to raise more than £250 for the Sobell House Hospice charity.

In September, the Cornmarket Street branch of Barclays Bank allowed customers to get close to the FA Barclaycard Premiership trophy which was on display for one day.

A cheque was presented to the charity's staff in the grounds of the hospice.

Rob Panting, Sobell House Hospice charity fundraiser, said: "This donation came as a complete surprise to staff at the charity, but when Barclays got in touch and told us about the generosity of their customers, everyone was thrilled to accept the donation, and were more than happy for them to see at first hand the excellent work the hospice staff carries out on a day-to-day basis."

In September 2003, the charity opened the new hospice building following a major capital appeal, which raised £3.7m for the project.

The hospice includes a 20-bed inpatient unit and day centre, providing support for around 15 patients each day.

Hundreds of patients and their families are currently benefiting from the wide range of services offered at Sir Michael Sobell House, from expert medical treatment to complementary therapy, as well as community nursing and bereavement counselling.
