Stourport Swifts 1, Thame Utd 2: There was joy at last for Thame on Saturday as they recorded their first victory of the campaign to move off the bottom of the Southern League Division 1 table.
On the field, this season has been one of almost unrelieved gloom for Thame, although they are just happy to be performing at this level following the loss of their ground in July.
Despite having to play their home matches at Aylesbury, the players have showed plenty of spirit, and this received its reward at Stourbridge, although the game was marred by a double sending-off at the end.
After 11 minutes, Alex Stewart scored Thame's first goal in four matches. Stourport failed to clear a United corner, and the ball fell to Stewart who steered it home from close range.
Player-manager Tony Joyce was unlucky not to increase Thame's lead when his blistering 30-yard volley bruised the Stourport crossbar.
Stourport pressed hard, and Paul Searl, in the Thame goal, once again pulled off some outstanding saves.
New signing Wayne Spencer increased the lead in the 40th minute, when it was his turn to steer the ball home from a corner.
Stourport pulled a goal back in first-half injury time via Duncan Willetts.
Both sides went close in the second half without scoring.
Just before the end, tempers flared following retaliation from a bad tackle.
As fists flew, the officials separated the players. Stourport goalscorer Willetts and Thame substitute Nik Rhodes were both dismissed.
Thame United: Searl, Freeman, Joyce, Lane (N Rhodes), Hocking, N Stewart (Kitson), Ferreira, Fisher, Spencer, A Stewart (Connelly), Groves.
