My wife and I decided to catch the bus on Tuesday evening last week and go to St Giles Fair in Oxford.

It had been some time since we had ventured into Oxford, as we find it unwelcoming these days.

As we travelled along Cowley Road, we were appalled at the blatant waste of money that is going on to "improve the area".

When we got off the bus at Carfax and started to walk along Cornmarket Street, I remarked to my wife that it was about time they finished this street, as it is a disgrace and an unsightly mess.

She replied: "It is finished, it was completed a few weeks ago."

I thought she was kidding. I wished she was, but alas, it is finished.

God help us if there are any more projects like this in the pipeline.

That I think will be the last time we go into Oxford.

We are both Oxford born and bred, and it is a pity to see such a wonderful city going the way it is, and you can't blame the colleges this time.

I hope commonsense will prevail, and someone will stop the rot, otherwise it will not be too long before there is not an Oxford that we are all proud of.
