The prosecution case against a pensioner with Parkinson's Disease who gave up driving after being caught speeding, only to be threatened with court proceedings, has been dropped.
Gordon Stables, 85, spoke of his relief after police told him he would not be prosecuted for speeding in Banbury Road, Kidlington, where he lives.
Mr Stables admitted driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone and sent off a cheque to pay the £60 fixed penalty ticket in May.
At the same time he decided to give up driving and told the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), which was renewing his licence, to keep it.
But when Mr Stables informed the police of his decision, his £60 cheque was returned and he was told he would have to go to court to resolve the matter.
Oxford police spokesman Vicky Evans said at the time that Mr Stables had been summoned to court because he did not send his driving licence to the payment office with his cheque.
She said the situation was further complicated because the pensioner should have told the DVLA not to deal with his licence until three points had been added and he had paid the fine.
The police fixed penalty office has since written to Mr Stables telling him the case has been dropped.
Manager Bryan Pritchard said in the letter: "I have given careful consideration to all the circumstances and have decided to take no further action."
Mr Stables said he was delighted but did not understand why he had received a summons in the first place.
He added: "I am over the moon. I feel great -- I'm £60 better off."
He said he was concerned when he first received the summons but soon calmed down.
He added: "I thought I would play them at their own game.
"I was rather looking forward to going to court, I have never been in my life."
