I would like to comment on the letters about the Manor Hospital.

I am 86 and had a total hip replacement on April 29 and was discharged five days later. Weeks before my operation I was visited by a physiotherapist from the Nuffield who decided that I would need certain aids when I was discharged such as a stool, a trolley table and two sticks to get around. When I left hospital I had neither of these things.

It was also decided on assessment that I would need a carer for at least two days and two nights. The carer came the first night and the first day, but the second day and night I had nobody. I was unable to get myself any food, so went without all day. I am in a retirement flat and would have gone 24 hours without any food and drink had it not been for my warden, who came at 9.30pm and gave her time off duty to get me a soup. There was no explanation or apology from anyone.

I had excellent treatment at the Manor after waiting two years for my operation. I felt privileged to be there, but what a pity the support is lacking on discharge. I know of others who were treated much the same. The fact that my treatment involved both hospitals was given as an excuse when I complained.

Elderly people do not expect or deserve to be treated so badly, it is totally unacceptable. My sympathy goes out to the two ladies, one from Kidlington and one from Headington and I send them my best wishes. They obviously felt as strongly as I do to write letters to the Oxford Mail. I hope others will do the same. M Blewett (Mrs), Latimer Road, Headington, Oxford
