We have always known that we have some of the best surgeons in the world in Oxford.
Now, it seems, their reputation is spreading fast. Increasingly, patients are being flown or driven in from other parts of the country to receive emergency treatment at our hospitals.
The effect is that operations on local patients are often being postponed.
Oxford has become a popular destination because its surgeons are all trauma specialists and can offer a top-rate service.
In other parts of the country, surgeons are orthopaedic specialists who also do trauma work.
The increase in the number of air ambulances has also played a part, making it easier for patients to reach Oxford.
The modern health service should be as flexible as possible.
The fact that patients live in one region should not prevent them receiving treatment in another.
But if some people are having operations cancelled as a result, it is a matter of concern.
It is not good enough for hospitals to say "we're victims of our own success" and do nothing.
