The family of a Horspath father-of-three killed when a slab of granite fell on him have paid tribute to a kind-hearted, larger-than-life man.
Peter Taylor, 60, of The Hollies, Cuddeson Road, died last Thursday at Waterstock Farm, in Waterstock as he helped to unload a lorry.
He was the husband of Delia Taylor, father to Sarah-Jane, Sally-Ann and Anna-Marie and grandfather to Daniel and Jemma.
In a letter to the Oxford Mail, his family said: "He was a larger-than-life, kind-hearted and strong character who didn't suffer fools gladly. He was not happy unless he was busy, either working, improving his home or helping others.
"Peter experienced both good and bad times, but no matter what he was dealt in life, he always tried to handle things in a dignified and respectful manner, never letting anything overcome or phase him."
Mr Taylor was a well-known and respected local businessman. He owned Select Tyres, in Lamarsh Road, Botley, and later moved the business to the Pony Road industrial estate.
He then ran Weylands Guest House, in Ladder Hill, Wheatley, with Mrs Taylor and his daughters, before launching a cattle breeding venture.
Since moving and retiring six years ago he had started working for Oxford Stone and Marble, in Pony Road, and was working for them when he died.
His family said: "He was our rock, our mentor, our protector -- our everything.
"We are very proud and privileged to have been a part of his life and we will all miss him eternally."
Mr Taylor's funeral service takes place at 11am on Wednesday, at St Giles Church, in Horspath, followed by a private burial. The wake will be held in the village hall from 12.30pm to 3pm. All those who wish to pay their respects are welcome to attend.
A 37-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of manslaughter was later released without charge.
