THE Oxfordshire Football Association have told parents of young players to behave themselves on the touchline.
In an unprecedented step, the county association have sent out no fewer than 5,600 letters to clubs calling for an improvement in behaviour.
Signed by chairman Ray Mills, the county say they are concerned by an increase in misconduct by spectators at youth and schoolboy matches when, in most cases, the problems have been caused by parents of the children playing.
It points out that clubs are directly responsible for the behaviour of spectators and that the OFA can fine or suspend them from taking part in any future matches for a defined period.
Mills says: "We view this increase in misconduct by spectators very seriously and, should it persist, we will consider taking action by suspending the offending clubs."
The OFA have asked the clubs to distribute the letter as an appeal for tolerance and discipline to be shown to all spectators at their games.
It concludes: "Our aim is to promote and encourage football at all levels and we do not wish to suspened clubs but will do so if this unpleasant trend does not cease.
"We ask for your co-operation in this matter and urge you to enjoy your football without resorting to argument or violence."
