A SUPERB all-round performance saw City upset the form book to beat Boreham Wood 3-0 and reach the final of the Guardian Insurance League Cup. Having beaten 'Wood', the holders of the trophy, and strongly fancied for the Ryman Premier League title twice in five days, and by 5-1 on aggregate, City will be wondering why they cannot produce this quality of form in the League.
City nearly took a shock lead when straight from the kick-off it was a relieved Taylor in the home goal who just managed to back pedal to tip over a fine opportunist effort from Phil Mason. But in the tenth minute, City took the lead when Peter Rhoades-Brown's free kick was nodded down by Andy Wallbridge for Andy Smith to hook home.
It should have been two in the 32nd minute when Liam Herbert opened up the home defence only for Ian Concannon's touch to let him down in front of goal.
A good effort from Herbert in the 52nd minute was saved at full stretch by Taylor, but City with the wind and driving rain in their faces, were now under pressure and Ian Moores saved well from Robins, Samuels and Marshall. City were playing their best football of the season and with 25 minutes left, went two up when Concannon burst onto a splendid ball from Mason and scored at the second attempt.
With 15 minutes left Concannon broke away again only to pull his shot wide but after Samuels had missed a sitter for Wood, it was City who was celebrating a notable victory when with two minutes left, Jason Caffel's through ball was controlled by Concannon who ran on round Taylor for City's third.
