A security guard needed hospital treatment after he was beaten-up while on duty at Oxford Brookes University.
Managers said they were investigating today after the attack at the Gypsy Lane campus in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The security guard, who has not been named, was set upon by a gang of men as he patrolled the campus at about 3am.
He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, for treatment but was not kept in overnight.
Police were called but the guard refused to make a complaint and no-one was arrested.
Helen Evans, spokesman for the university, said staff were "shocked" by the assault.
She said: "Police were called in the early hours to the Brookes campus because a certain guard was attacked.
"We are liaising with the police about the incident.
"Obviously we are very shocked that this has happened and we are making efforts to investigate the circumstances."
Ms Evans said she could not comment on whether any students were involved in the incident.
