AFTER revealing that Perriss Wilkins's winning throws were in a state of decline only last week, the Banbury discus thrower made me eat my words as he shattered the British record in Birmingham with a throw of 66.64m.
Wilkins, it would appear, is in unbeatable mood and his form must augur well for the European Championships and Commonwealth Games later this year.
The 29-year-old increased his best-ever throw by a massive 5.58m at a Crawley Open meeting last August when overhauling Bob Weir's British record of 64.60.
And Wilkins took the event to new heights when adding another 1.42m to the distance when representing Banbury Harriers last weekend.
He flew out to Los Angeles on Monday and was unavailable for comment, but he must now have cemented his place at the top of the British throwers, while also blasting his way into medal contention.
He has already predicted seeing off the challenge of rival Weir in Kuala Lumpur in September, while he reached the qualifying mark for the Europeans in Buda-pest when setting a best-ever county championship mark of 62.30 at Tilsley Park last month.
Wilkins then threw the discus further than anyone at an Inter-Coun-ties meeting for 25 years when recording 61.69 at Bedford three weeks ago.
A week later, on the same track, the Banbury man won again despite seeing his winning effort slip to 57.47.
His latest record-breaking throw will doubtless have left him on 'top of the world' as he boarded his flight to the States.
And that's where he intends to be with Jurgen Schulz's world best of 74.08 firmly in his sights.
