Grandmother Irene Taylor couldn't believe her luck when she scooped nearly £110,000 - on a single game of bingo.

Mrs Taylor, a regular at the Welcome Club, in Broad Street, Banbury, got a full house in the National Bingo Game, run at clubs across the country.

As well as the club prize of £34, she won the regional prize of £9,934 - and then discovered she had scooped the national jackpot of £100,000.

"It hasn't sunk in yet," said Mrs Taylor, 57, of Little Tew, near Chipping Norton. "I'm waiting for my son-in-law to come back from holiday so that he can advise how best to invest the money."

The National Bingo Game links 600 bingo clubs across Britain by computer to play the same game at the same time, with a total weekly pay-out of more than £1m.

Mrs Taylor, an auxiliary nurse for disabled children's charity Cotswold Across, completed a full house in just 41 numbers, the fewest in the country. It was the first ever major National Bingo Game win for the Welcome Club. Mrs Taylor, who took up bingo six years ago and now plays three times a week, added: "I took some persuading at first. I thought bingo was for old ladies with spectacles, but it really is a great night out with friends. My children are now keen to start playing bingo, too!"

National Bingo Game spokesman Georgina Palmer said: "People are choosing the excitement of a whole evening's entertainment over the two-minute thrill of the lottery - and the chances of winning are much higher with bingo, too."

Mrs Taylor will be presented with her cheque at the Welcome Club on Sunday evening.
