CHESS ace Jonathan Lappage, of Magdalen College School, Oxford, has been crowned a national champion.
Jonathan scored five-and-a-half out of six to take the under 11s title at the IAPS National Quickplay Championships at Oundle School, Peterborough.
His schoolmate Oliver Taylor just missed out on the under 13 title after finishing equal first with five out of six.
Lappage also helped Magdalen's under 11s win a silver award in the National Primary Schools semi-finals at Prestatyn.
In seventh position with 17 points, they missed the gold award by just half a point.
The Magdalen youngsters won four of their six matches and were in the top four all the way until the last round.
Matthew Abigial was their top scorer with five out of six. Lappage and Guy Kelly both scored four.
