Pensioner Frank Tyrrell made a faux pas when he mistook a road hump for a pedestrian crossing.
But the slip put him in hospital after a furious driver allegedly leaped out and head-butted him.
Frank, 69, was walking his dog in High Street, Witney, at 11.15am on Saturday when he stepped out in front of a car.
Eyewitnesses claimed the driver then attacked Frank, who lives nearby. He was treated at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.
Sgt Mark Venn, of Witney police, said: "A local man was arrested, charged with assault and bailed to appear before magistrates."
