Pomp and ceremony filled the streets of Oxford as an ancient University tradition was played out.
Public figures from public life paraded through the streets with University staff at Encaenia, the University's honorary degree ceremony.
Those honoured at the Sheldonian Theatre were former Lord Chancellor, Lord Mackay of Clashfern; Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood; Dr Sadako Ogata, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; Dr Alan Dorey, the former Registrar at Oxford University; Sir Michael Atiyah, former master of Trinity College, Cambridge; Prof Robert Hinde, formerly master of St John's College, Cambridge; Neil MacGregor, director of the National Gallery; Sir James Mirrlees, professor of Political Economy and fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge; and Prof Christopher Ricks, professor of English at Boston University. The parade was led by the University Chancellor Lord Jenkins of Hillhead., whose 12-year-old grandaughter Alexandra acted as his page
