District councillor Jo Currie faces jail after admitting plundering £30,000 from church funds.
Currie, 53, of Church Street, Somerton, pleaded guilty to 12 counts of theft and three of false accounting when he appeared before a judge at Oxford Crown Court today.
Judge Anthony King told him: "This was a serious act of dishonesty and is likely to lead to a custodial sentence."
Currie, who is married with two step-daughters, has represented Heyford on Cherwell District Council since May 1995.
He is a former treasurer of Somerton Parish Church and was arrested last November by detectives investigating the disappearance of £30,000 from church funds. The offences date from June 1994 up until his arrest.
Currie, wearing a blue pin-striped suit, spoke only to confirm his name and plead guilty to all charges in the short hearing.
He will be sentenced in August once reports on him have been compiled by the Probation Service.
