Police believe a 30-year-old man found lying in an Oxford street today with serious facial injuries had been attacked.
The man - who has not been named but is thought to live in the area - was spotted by a passer-by.
He was found slumped in Havelock Road, off Oxford Road, Cowley, at 8.50am this morning.
Ambulance crews were called and he was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
Officers from Oxford CID are now waiting to speak to him.
Thames Valley police spokesman Richard Goodfellow told the Oxford Mail that the man had lost a lot of blood, but added his injuries were not thought to be life- threatening. He said: "It looks like he suffered quite a nasty attack.
"He managed to get himself to the ambulance when it arrived and is being treated for serious facial injuries consistent with an assault."
Mr Goodfellow added: "He was taken to casualty and we are hoping to talk to him later."
A motive for the attack is not clear but police are now appealing for witnesses or people with information.
Anyone with information about the attack should telephone the police on 01865 266333.
