Busy Botley Road in west Oxford will be closed as work begins on a new pedestrian bridge.
The bridge is being built to link Oxford station with the nearly completed station car park in Becket Street, on the other side of Botley Road.
Two giant cranes will be fitted to the bridge's parapets. It will mean Botley Road will be closed between Becket Street and Cripley Road from 8pm on August 3 to 6.30am the following morning.
The city council said the date was not yet confirmed and may be switched to August 4 or August 10 and 11.
Bill Reed for the city council warned that the road would be closed again once work on the bridge got under way.
Alternative routes along the A34 to Hinksey Hill interchange and then along Abingdon Road or north to Peartree interchange and Woodstock Road will be signposted.
The usual rush-hour queues along Botley Road have been made worse recently because of road widening work.
Mr Reed said: "We do not anticipate the closure causing much congestion at these times. We have chosen the quietest time."
