A Crimewatch UK TV re-enactment of an armed jewellery raid in Oxford produced potentially vital information, say police.

Detectives investigating the robbery on the Turl Street jewellers received a number of calls immediately after last night's crimebusting BBC1 programme.

Two armed robbers burst into Rowell Silversmiths on May 18 and ordered staff to lie on the floor before grabbing £250,000 of jewellery.

But despite a £10,000 reward and an investigation, there have been no arrests.

Det Con Kevin Cox said police had received two phone calls from the same person giving 'a name and other details' of the 'security guard' involved in the raid. He said police were also pleased with three calls giving possible names of a man shown in a photo-fit of the getaway driver. "This is something we can definitely follow up," he said.

There was information too about the driver of a dark VW Golf, suspiciously wearing surgical gloves, seen near the scene of the raid.

Crimewatch UK viewers were also shown the appalling violence endured by jeweller Adam Holdsworth, who feared for his life.

He said: "After I pressed the panic alarm, the emotions were running rapidly. It was at that point I knew that if I pushed it any further, instead of getting another pistol whipping, something more devastating could have occurred."
