A raid on a post office at Wootton, near Woodstock, sparked a major hunt around the village last night.
A police helicopter and sniffer dogs were called in after a man threatened post mistress Ann Day, 54.
He fled with an unknown amount of cash, after being chased by a passer-by.
The robber, wearing sun glasses and a black jacket, walked into Wootton Store and Post Office at 4.15pm yesterday to find Ms Day working alone.
Det Con Steve Honey said: "The man was not armed but he intimated that he would use violence.
"He ran around to the till, then ran off along Bletchingdon Road. A member of the public gave chase. The post mistress was badly shaken but suffered no physical injury."
A man and a woman were being questioned about the raid by police today.
They were arrested in the early hours a few miles from Wootton.
