Police have issued a warning after two teenage boys were arrested for pointing what appeared to be a gun at passing motorists.
Supt Peter Davies spoke out after the incident near Larkmead School in Abingdon last Thursday. Two 14-year-old boys were arrested and later bailed pending further inquiries.
Armed officers were not called, but Supt Davies said suspected firearms incidents were always treated with the "utmost seriousness".
He said: "Those who play such silly pranks are wasting valuable police time - and they could be putting themselves in real danger.
"If armed officers are deployed and come across someone apparently pointing a gun at them, the consequences could be tragic.
"We urge parents not to buy, or permit their children to buy, replica guns." and warn anyone considering using an air rifle or imitation weapon to frighten the public "just for a laugh" to stop and think. It isn't funny and could be fatal."
