The end of daily traffic jams in Botley Road, Oxford, is in sight with partial resurfacing next week.
The road will close overnight between the entrance to St Frideswide's Church and Ferry Hinksey Road from 8pm next Wednesday until 6am the next day.
Workmen will resurface the road but pedestrians will still be able to use the pavement. There will be diversions for them and cyclists to avoid St Frideswide's Bridge.
Homes west of Ferry Hinksey Road will only be accessible from the Botley direction, while Osney Island can be reached from the city centre.
Beams for the new footbridges beside St Frideswide Bridge were put in place last Saturday. The new pelican crossing outside the White House pub will soon be working.
Keith Welham, chief engineer for the county council, said: "After this second closure, final resurfacing work will be completed. This should be an end to serious hold-ups for traffic."
