Governors at Bullingdon Prison today promised to consider giving inmates food which has not been genetically engineered, after a hunger striker agreed to end his protest.
Deputy governor Luke Sergeant has agreed to write to prison bosses in an attempt to raise the issues of genetically manipulated organisms in food.
The move followed meetings with the Genetic Engineering Network and animal rights protester Ben Thompson, who went on hunger strike to protest about the issue.
Mr Sergeant is hoping the issue will be addressed at national level and has also agreed to ask caterers to see if they can secure genetically engineered-free supplies in certain productsincluding bread and soya milk.
