AN RAF parachutist was demoted after a court martial found him guilty of assault.

Sgt Alistair Wright rained down vicious punches on a Naval petty officer after bursting into his room while he slept.

The incident took place last December when the men were stationed at Mount Pleasant services base in the Falklands, and followed a practical joke which backfired.

The Brize Norton hearing was told earlier that father-of-two Wright, 37, launched the attack when a colleague locked him in his room following a night out. Petty Officer Leslie Fletcher suffered facial injuries when he tried to come to Wright's aid and Wright thought he was responsible for the prank.

Wright, a member of the world-famous RAF parachute team The Falcons, was reduced to the rank of Corporal and ordered to pay his victim £1,000 compensation.

Before passing sentence yesterday, Judge Advocate Bayliss said: "You have not shown one jot of remorse. Indeed, you have sought to put all the blame on your victim."
