DRIVERS on the M40 have been shocked to find themselves the apparent target of a military tank.

The mystery vehicle appeared in a field, off the southbound carriageway of the motorway, between junction nine at Wendlebury and eight at Wheatley earlier this week.

Several drivers called the Oxford Mail to say they feared that it could cause an accident.

Headteacher Catherine Long, of Bell Lane, Wheatley, said: "It is very close to the motorway and the gun is pointed directly at the traffic.

"I find it extremely disturbing and offensive. In school, I do everything I can to counteract this sort of influence. It is giving out a very threatening message."

Phil Dourado, of Bloxham, near Banbury, said: "I trust it is a joke but it is not a very funny one. I am worried it could cause an accident, it is very distracting." A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said the tank did not belong to them.

Thames Valley Police were also unable to provide any information on the tank.

It is believed to be the practical joke of a local landowner.
