A woman lorry driver died after a collision on the A34 near Weston-on-the-Green early today, triggering rush-hour traffic chaos.

Paramedics rushed to the southbound carriageway of the A34 between Wendlebury and the Kidlington turning at 2.20am after the two-lorry smash.

Attempts to save the 40-year-old woman, who is not believed to be from Oxfordshire, failed and she died at the scene.

The carriageway from junction 9, where the road joins the M40, was closed after the lorry shed its load of beer and fruit juice bottles on to the carriageway. Major jams built up after diversions were put in place on to the A43 and B430 but the road was reopened by 9am.

The other lorry driver, a 54-year-old man who has also not been identified, was taken to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital suffering neck injuries.
