Long-serving police inspector Anthony Laycock has been accused of threatening to kill a colleague.
Insp Laycock, 44, was remanded in custody charged with threatening to kill Sgt Anthony Brown.
He faces a second charge of possessing an offensive weapon - a walking stick - in the same alleged incident.
Laycock, based at Thames Valley Police headquarters in Kidlington, was charged after the incident on Tuesday and appeared before Bicester magistrates yesterday. The case will return to court on Monday.
Banbury-based Sgt Brown did not appear at the hearing.
Laycock, a divorced dad-of-two from Ravencroft, Bicester, became officer-in-charge of the town in 1992.
He has been on the force for 25 years, on top of three years as a cadet, joining up at the age of 16.
He has served in many different areas, including Oxford, Didcot and Witney. He first served as a Pc at Cowley in 1973 and ten years later was promoted to sergeant. Four years after that, he gained the rank of inspector.
Insp Laycock has worked in a range of fields including traffic, CID, research and planning, and complaints and discipline.
