Hundreds of new students protested outside an ancient academic ceremony against the abolition of grants.
Many of the 4,500 students wore orange ribbons in sympathy with those refusing to pay their fees when they dressed up in gowns for the Oxford University matriculation ceremony at the Sheldonian Theatre on Saturday.
As they came out they waved banners saying Fight the Fees and brandished mock balls and chains.
Janet Wilson, of Balliol College, who has not paid her fees, said the abolition of grants meant most students would end up £12,000 in debt.
