Thousands of people will be able to recycle bottles, newspapers and clothes from their doorsteps in a pilot recycling scheme which starts next month.
About 10,000 houses in Oxford are being asked to use plastic boxes, which they can also fill with washed cans and tins and old reusable shoes, to save them driving to recycling centres.
Oxford City Council, which will collect the boxes on normal dustbin days, aims to recycle 1,200 tonnes of waste per year and is to spend £100,000 on the project.
Initially, 10,000 households in Iffley, Barton, the Magdalen Road and Howard Street area, Jericho, the city centre and Wolvercote are being invited to take part from next month.
The scheme will be extended to the whole of the city next year if it proves to be successful.
Leaflets are being sent out to explain how the scheme works.
