A pilot recycling scheme giving people the opportunity to be environmentally-friendly from the comfort of home is under way.
About 10,000 Oxford households are being offered plastic boxes to recycle waste on their doorsteps.
The boxes, which will be collected when the dustbins are emptied, will be offered throughout the city if the experimental scheme proves a success.
People can use the boxes for green, clear, brown and blue bottles, glass jars, cleaned out food tins, drink cans, newspapers, writing paper and old shoes and clothes.
Several areas of the city are taking part in the trial and Oxford City Council hopes at least 70 per cent of households will join in.
The first boxes will be collected next week from the areas in- volved: Iffley, Barton, the Magdalen Road and Howard Street area, Jericho, Norham Manor and Wolvercote.
The scheme will increase Oxford's recycling rate from the current national average of 6.5 per cent to about ten per cent.
