STEVE Davis's operation on Thursday to remove scar tissue from his left Achilles tendon was a success, according to physio John Clinkard.
However, the United defender will be out until after Christmas.
"Steve had an operation to strip a decompression in his left Achilles, basically removing the scar tissue," Clinkard said.
"He is now in a moveable plaster for 12 days and then we can begin the rehabilitation work. The operation is quite a minor procedure but it's unlikely he will be playing again for two to three months."
Joey Beauchamp's reward for rejecting a possible move to Reading or Manchester City this week could be a place on the bench for today's Division 1 game against Port Vale at the Manor.
Manager Malcolm Shotton has named every available player in his squad, including Beauchamp, despite his annoyance at Beauchamp's refusal to drop down a division.
Director Maurice Evans admits he is surprised there hasn't been more interest in other United players.
Not even the likes of Phil Gilchrist, Phil Whitehead, Paul Powell and Dean Windass have attracted a bid.
"We think they're good players," Evans said, "but others don't seem to share that view strongly enough.
"The situation remains the same. We've still got to try to sell a player."
