VOLKSWAGEN UK will be selling left-hand-drive models of the eagerly-awaited new Beetle from spring next year.
Demand for the new Beetle in the United States, following its enthusiastic reception at the Detroit Auto Show last January, has already caused Volkswagen to raise production from 100,000 units a year to a current 160,000.
Initially, 1,000 new Beetles in a mix of 2.0-litre 115 horsepower and TDI 90 horsepower will be imported. A higher-spec Beetle will be launched with the introduction of right-hand-drive powered by Volkswagen's 2.3-litre V5 engine with 150 horsepower.
Pricing is still to be determined but it is currently predicted to be around £16,200 for a left-hand-drive Beetle 2.0 litre. The pricing is expected to be below that of an equally-specified Golf GTI three-door.
Both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive UK market Beetles will share the same specification.
Standard equipment will include anti-lock brakes, driver and front seat passenger airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, electric front windows, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, remote control central locking and alarm, air conditioning, 16in alloy wheels and, of course, a vase built into the dashboard.
