A man was killed yesterday when he was hit by a high-speed Intercity train.

The driver could only watch helplessly as the train hit Peter McDonnell, 34, from Banbury.

A police spokesman said Mr McDonnell had stood on the tracks just outside Goring station and was waiting for the train.

He said: "The train was going straight through the station at quite a speed. All the driver could have done would have been to step on the brakes."

Mr McDonnell lived in Banbury, although his relatives were believed to come from the Liverpool area.

An undertaker was called to scene and the body was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The Great Western train travelling from Bristol to London, which was left with a deep dent after the impact, was delayed for almost five hours at Reading station.

A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out and an inquest will be held.
