Witney Tn 1,
Carterton Tn 2 HOLDERS Witney Town were knocked out of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup by former player Colin Tyrrell who fired home a 90th minute penalty to give jubilant Carterton a shock quarter-final victory last night.
The winning goal came courtesy of a highly contentious penalty decision. Amidst feet and bodies inside the Witney area, the ball seemingly struck a Carterton player's flailing hand.
The referee bizarrely pointed to the spot, adjudging the ball to have hit Witney defender Andy Martin's hand- and Tyrell drilled home the spot-kick.
With the pitch rendered an ice rink following a heavy snow shower, the Hellenic League leaders made light of the horrendous conditions and took the lead in the 19th minute.
Lee Sharkey broke clear and calmly despatched the ball past the advancing Kevin Alder from 12 yards.
After the break, Witney were on top, but the Carterton defence defended like Trojans.
Witney thought they had got out of jail when just two minutes from time, another high hopeful ball into the Carterton area caused panic. Two efforts were blocked before Steve Ovens bundled the ball home.
But then came Tyrell's penalty. Seconds later, the referee blew for full time, sparking mass celebrations on the pitch.
BANBURY United's quarter-final tie at home to Thame United was postponed due to a frozen pitch. It will now be played on Monday.
