Labour councillors have chosen Val Smith as the new Lord Mayor of Oxford.
Mrs Smith, wife of employment minister and Oxford East MP Andrew Smith, has represented Blackbird Leys on the city council for 12 years.
Mrs Smith, who has lived in Oxford for 33 years, said: "I want to celebrate social housing and local communities in my year of office.
"It doesn't matter who you are or what you are, we all have the right to decent homes.
"The Millennium year will be a time to celebrate local communities."
The new mayor, who will be formally selected next month, will take over from this year's Lord Mayor, Carole Roberts, at the annual council meeting on May 20.
Peter Moss, who represents Littlemore, will be proposed for deputy mayor while Iffley councillor Beryl Keen will be proposed as Sheriff.
