in five-goal bonanza Bracknell Tn 0,
Abingdon Tn 5 BASEMENT boys Abingdon Town ended a run of more than three months without a win by hitting five goals at Bracknell in Ryman League Division 2 on Saturday.
Bottom of the table and going into the game with two successive 4-0 home defeats behind them, Abingdon turned it on for manager Keith Stopps, who recorded his first success since taking on the job in December.
Amazingly, Abingdon were also without key players Kurt Douglas (suspended), Darren McNamara and Ben Border (both unavailable).
Fellow strugglers Bracknell, who included two recent loan signings from Farnborough Town, conceded the first goal after 11 minutes when Abingdon skipper Roger Charles beat keeper Edwards with a 25-yard volley.
After 24 minutes, Cecil Rodney cut inside to fire past Edwards for Town's second.
Abingdon's confidence was growing by the minute as the lively Reuben Wells and Richie Twine caused the home defence all sorts of problems. Bracknell hit a post shortly before the interval but Abingdon scored their third goal in the 44th minute when Twine fired home.
The second half saw Abingdon continue to dominate as the impressive Wells netted twice, the first stroked around the keeper and inside the far post, the second a thunderous drive from 18 yards.
Between those he also struck the crossbar with a firm header and was denied what looked to be a very legitimate penalty claim.
Abingdon's performance was epitomised by defender Mick McLennon, who, despite suffering a severe facial injury in the 31st minute, return heavily bandaged to complete the game and then left to have a number of stitches inserted in his injury.
