Thame Utd 2, Leighton Tn 1 THAME'S Ryman Division 2 victory on Saturday was completely overshadowed by the actions of Leighton's 21-year-old full back Lee Campbell.
The former England Under 18 triallist punched referee Paul Randall to the ground in the 50th minute after being sent off for foul and abusive language.
The High Wycombe official had just booked Campbell for dissent and as the player continued his protest, the referee produced the red card. The enraged Campbell hit the official on the jaw, knocking him to the ground.
Amidst scenes of mayhem, the referee received treatment from St John Ambulancemen and was able to resume after a ten-minute stoppage.
The result was of little importance after such an event.
Thame had keeper Ian Moores to thank for going one up at the break. He produced a tremendous penalty save in the 28th minute to deny Gary Sealey. Thame went ahead in the 35th minute when Jefferson Louis's cross found Jason Maciak at the far post.
Two minutes after the break the visitors levelled through Josh Sozzo.
After Campbell's moment of madness, the remainder of the game was played in a subdued atmosphere.
The winner came in the 82nd minute when Liam Herbert's clever lay off was met by Shaun Walker.
The game ended with a standing ovation for referee Randall as he left the pitch.
The official was taken ill after the game and was detained in hospital overnight suffering form concussion.
THAME travel to Banbury United tonight in the quarter-final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup (7.45).
Banbury will be withjout Terry Muckelberg, Mark Whitehouse, Les Phillips and Jim Watson. Youth players Jamie Crammond, Ricky Smith, Matty Jackson and Danny Carter come in.
