Fourteen close contacts of an Oxford Brookes University student who died from meningitis have been vaccinated.
The university said it had identified the strain of meningitis which killed first-year student Adam Prior as the rare group C, which means there is an effective vaccination. It means the case is more likely to be an isolated one. The more common group B strain tends to cause clusters of cases.
No new cases of the disease have been reported among students or staff since engineering student Adam, 19, was admitted to the John Radcliffe Hospital on Saturday (Feb 13) where he died.
Brookes Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Upton urged students and staff to be aware of the symptoms of the disease and call the helpline - on 0500 484004 - if they were at all worried.
Student Union deputy president Katerina Nixon said students were reacting to the tragedy calmly and sensibly.
