SCHOOLS and colleges could soon be plugging into solar power.
Teachers and governors are being encouraged to apply to join a special programme which will give them a chance to explore the power system.
Under the Scolar Programme for Photovoltaics, 100 schools nationwide will gain their own solar power system, which will run a suite of computers and could even export power to the National Grid during holidays.
Schools interested in the scheme must have a suitable south-facing site and must be prepared to provide a third of the cost of the scheme - about £4,500 - themselves.
The initiative is being operated by a consortium of British solar experts, including the Environmental Change Unit at Oxford University.
Schools interested in taking part should write to: Dr Daniel Davies, HGa, Burderop Park, Swindon.
