A step-by-step guide has been launched to ensure Millennium celebrations go off with a bang, writes Karen Rosine.
The Millennium Special Events Guide is now available for all events organisers in the Thames Valley area planning the party of the century.
The leaflet has been compiled by the emergency services and local authorities of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire and is available free from libraries, leisure centres, local authority premises and police stations in the three counties. The guide aims to ensure organisers take all steps necessary to ensure a safe and successful event.
It stresses the need to inform the authorities of all events at least six months in advance.
A database of Millennium events is being put together by the police on behalf of the local authorities, fire, ambulance and health services in the Thames Valley. A list of other important considerations - such as traffic, parking, health and safety issues, insurance and licensing - are also identified and advice given.
"Our aim is for everyone in the Thames Valley to celebrate the Millennium in safety," said Thames Valley Police Chief Insp Dave Buckenham. "We are taking all possible steps to prepare for the demands which may be placed upon us.
"We are urging members of the public to attend only properly organised events, not only to assist the emergency services and local authorities, but to ensure they have a Millennium to remember."
