A new 1,400-seat concert hall was highlighted among plans to redevelop a former Oxfordshire prison unveiled today, writes Stephen Deal.
Oxford University's St Peter's College submitted the plans, as Oxfordshire County Council's strategy and resources committee met to discuss the future of Oxford prison.
The prison and former castle, off New Road, closed down three years ago - but so far the county has been unable to agree on plans to open it to the public. The Osborne Group, led by entrepreneur Trevor Osborne, has submitted plans for a hotel complex, council offices, restaurant, museum and a health and fitness club. However, there have been concerns among some members that the group's proposals would not offer enough for the general public.
A new proposal submitted to councillors by St Peter's College points out a concert hall would be a great addition to the city. The college has offered to discuss its plans with Mr Osborne.
David Stanley, representing the Soldiers in Oxfordshire Group, also appealed to councillors for a military museum to be opened. He claimed backers for the idea already included the Duke of Marlborough and two former Lord Mayors.
He said: "I think we should not underestimate the tourist potential of what is down there. It is very significant indeed."
Councillors were being asked to set up a meeting with Mr Osborne in June this year to discuss his plans further.
